The Spring Equinox is the astrological New Year. With the Sun in Aries, we burst out of the gate with the buds of spring, ready to remake our lives. This year spring is amplified by the entry of Uranus into Aries, where the planet of liberation, rebellion and idealism will remain until early 2019.
Even with this cosmic invigoration, the psychological health of our country could still be stuck in the mud of pessimism. Our collective moods are constrained by worry and doubt. If we can transcend the heaviness, we might push the economy away from extraction and death, towards more beautiful and just pursuits. There is a lesson here about art, craft and cunning. How would you like to use your skills, your time, and your goddess-given talents?
Necessity is the mother of all invention, and indeed dire straits often force us to form new strategies. Here’s your chance to shake off the doldrums and apply your creativity toward change. There is truly a wealth of potential here to enliven your life right now, to pioneer a new world filled with purpose. But it will not happen without effort and discipline.
This winter, we saw people in Northern Africa challenging the status quo and demanding freedom from oppressive governments. We also saw examples of aggression, repression and violence, such as the Tucson shootings and escalating polarizing rhetoric (no relation). While Uranus can liberate us from out-dated belief systems or structures in our lives, we have to be mindful of individual needs spinning out of control into fanaticism and authoritarianism.
Historically, Uranus in Aries is a volatile time. It is also a time of innovation and expansion, dealing out a boost of energy to help us get clearer about our unique purpose. Uranus in Aries is the power to dare, eloquently expressed by Nietzsche’s assertion that, “Genius has its source in instinct.”
Pay special attention to women’s movements and causes over the spring and summer. This is where the most energy and momentum will be felt. My imagination conjures up mothers of all classes mobilizing to end poverty, gender queer feminists meditating for peace, entrepreneurial women building businesses with environmental integrity, women poets dismantling the corporate media machine. Give your support to the trail-blazing women in your life and beyond. It’s the current antidote to cynicism and apathy.
Another way to access this momentum is by hooking up with the Divine Feminine. Look within to your own feminine powers (yes, you) and see how you can support them. Here are three aspects of the Divine Feminine. See which one is calling to you:
Virgin: The part of you that is wilderness, that knows and trusts the body, that moves from instinct.
Mother: The part of you that is resourceful, who makes things work despite hardship or lack of time, who knows how to nurture creativity and make life.
Crone: The part of you that makes enchantment and magic, who knows how to move with the cycles, who sees beyond the material world and into the spiritual plane.
As Neptune and Chiron move thru Pisces this summer, we can sink into the Divine Feminine within us and see Her many aspects manifesting in the world around us.
In other news, this will be my last article for Alternatives. As things change in my own life, I am recognizing the need to simplify. So I’ll be taking some time to finish other writing projects and focusing more attention to my family and community.
I have thoroughly enjoyed offering these astrological forecasts to you each season. Astrology is one of many tools available to us that engage the language of the mythic. It’s easy to succumb to the power of disenchantment, to believe that the effects of violence, greed, and ignorance are too overwhelming to counteract. But when you step into the realm of story you connect to a larger world of power and wisdom, where each action you take has profound outcomes that you may not be able to see in the moment.
When you agree to dance with mystery, forces beyond your imagining come rushing in, feeding you with a new perspective and a fiercer love than you’ve ever known. This is a kind of prayer I am writing to you now. It is also the truth of what is awakening in the world. May we let our eyes behold such dazzling beauty.
