Spring 2011 Issue 57

David Campbell Wilson studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and at Syracuse University in upstate New York. His work has exhibited in Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Seattle, and Portland. He is the recipient of the 2010 McKenzie Medal from the Philadelphia Sketch Club, and the Hiram Gee Painting Award from Syracuse University. David currently lives and works in Philadelphia where he teaches drawing and painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. For this month’s cover, Wilson painted the hands of Los Angeles artist, Luis Sanchez. Luis is a Mexican-born artist who moved to Los Angeles from Seattle in 2002. Working in both painting and sculpture, Luis creates powerful, figurative imagery reminiscent of the degraded stucco walls and frescoes that influenced his artistic development during his childhood in Mexico City. Plagued by health problems throughout his life, Luis has been living on dialysis awaiting a kidney transplant since January, 2007. The wait for a transplant in Los Angeles can take as long as seven years, and it can be very difficult to keep up with the work and bills while struggling with life on dialysis. To learn more about Luis’ artwork, or to donate to his cause, please visit his website at www.luissanchezfineart.com.
